Combine local data with published data set

I have a report with the only dataset being an Excel file in SharePoint.  I want to add a data set that is already published in my PowerBI workspace (which gets data from an on-prem database).

My end goal is to have multiple datasets published from various sources (files or databases) and then be able to add any combination to a report on my desktop.

I keep getting the error below.

Hi @KristinR

You mentioned that you can be able to add any combination to a report on your desktop. Do you want to combine various data sources, or data sets generated by various data sources in Desktop ? Will this error be reported if you connect to each data source individually?

I have local data sources as well ones published in a PowerBI workspace online.  I assumed I would be able to add both to one report in PowerBI desktop.

When I try to add an online data source after I've already linked to a local data source, I get the error mentioned in the thread.

When I try it the other way around (online first) then the options to add any other source (such as Excel/Web/SQL) - only PowerBI Template Apps  is available.

Edited to add: I am using Version: 2.111.590.0 64-bit (November 2022)
