Bug in Live query mode to SSAS Multidimensional

Power BI Desktop reports "Couldn't load the model schema" when connected in live mode to an SSAS 2016 multidimensional cube.

To reproduce:

- Create a parent child dimension, and set the ‘Naming Template’ property of the parent child attribute to use non-default naming for the levels.

- Set the name of one of these levels to the same name as another attribute in the dimension.

- Connect Power BI in live mode and I get “Couldn't load the model schema” error.

If I rename the level to a name not also used by an attribute then it works fine with the same cube.

I just tried the same scenario as you but cannot repro the same issue. I suggest you to create a support ticket at http://support.powerbi.com (see bottom of page) since it may be machine specific.

Hi Herbert

I've reproduced it on a number of machines, so is not machine specific, and can be reproduced very easily using the following steps:

1) Visual Studio 2015, create a new SSAS Multidimensional project

2) connect it to an AdventureWorksDW database (I used the 2012 version)

3) Add Dim Employee and FactSalesQuota only

4) Create the Dim Employee dimension, accepting all default, plus adding all available fields as attributes

5) Create a cube with Dim Employee and FactSalesQuota

6) Deploy (as a baseline successful test), and Power BI will connect to it fine

7) Edit Dim Employee

😎 Select 'Parent Employee Key (the parent child attribute)

9) In properties, edit the 'NamingTemplate' property

10) Set the level 2 name to be "First Name"

11) Deploy again, and Power BI will not be able to connect to it

I have however created a support ticket for this as well (117021315309323)

Thanks

Alex

@alexwhittles

Can you repro this issue with Excel?

Hi Herbert

It works perfectly in Excel, it's only a problem with Power BI.

Thanks

Alex

@v-haibl-msftHi Herbert, I'm still working with them to investigate the problem. The support team have the repro steps, and I've sent traces etc. so now just waiting to hear back.
