Bug Report - Migration of DirectQuery report to new PBIRS server - model not supported

We have an unusual situation: Mostly outlined here:

Solved: Re: Report Migration to new server prevents edit -... - Microsoft Power BI Community

( solved = "it is a bug")

Background:

our DirectQuery report, successfully running on our 'old' PBIRS server, May, 2022 release.

Migration of our PBIRS to a new server, with a new server name, Still PBIRS, May, 2022 release.
Migration was via a backup and restore of the "ReportServer" database. and typical setup.

DirectQuery report, now successfully running on our new PBIRS server, May, 2022 release.   so far, all is good.

Our DirectQuery report needs to be edited:
- Download of DirectQuery report will not open in PBI Desktop, May, 2022 version:  error:
" This file uses many-to-many relationships or a composite model which combines DirectQuery sources and/or imported data. These models aren't currently supported in Power BI Report Server"
-> This report is running on our new server, and was running on our old, legacy PBIRS, both running May, 2022 release.

-> the older backups will open in PBI Desktop.  Just not any that we download from the PBIRS server.

Next Steps:

1) we upgraded to the January, 2023 release of PBIRS - still will not open.

2) we upgraded to the January, 2023 release of PBI Desktop - still will not open.

And, that is the end of the road for this report.  The report will not open, and minimal guidance on how to open the report and fix.

Fortunately, We have individual backups of all our reports ( via PowerShell), so we can use an older backup.

Thanks,

Status: Investigating

Hi @a4peterson ,

Is there a composite model or many to many relationship in the report? Can't all reports be opened after migration or just this one. Also, please try to right-click the report and select open with PBI Desktop.

Hello team.

As mentioned before, this is a report that continues to work on our PBIRS, and has always worked.

It was created with the proper BPIRS Desktop.   And uses only DirectQuery, with a single  one to many relationship.  It only has two views.  So.  It is not a composite model, and it does not have a many-to-many configuration.

Note that we can only edit a report saved before our server migration.  So, we cannot see if the server migration corruped the report.  It is however, still running successfully.

And, while the report runs successfully in PBIRS, we cannot open it to edit it. With discussed error message.

Many of our reports are Import, and so far, this is the only report we have found that has the error message. There could be others, we have lots of reports, and no time to test them all.

When we attempt to open the report directly into PBI Desktop from the report server, it too gives us the message " unable to open.  This file uses many-to-many relationships or a composite model which combines DirectQuery sources and/or imported data. These models aren't currently supported in Power BI Report Server'

Thanks
