On-premises data gateway - Sign on user usage

Is anyone able to clarify exactly what the work/school account is used for in the on-premise datagateway install?

  • Is it used purely for gateway registration purposes only?
  • Is it used in the communications with the service bus?

Thanks

@Anonymous ,

It is used to register the gateway, You can add multiple gateway admins in case the registration account  is deleted.

@Anonymous,

The user you sign in during the gateway installation is actually the account you use to sign in Power BI Service. Power BI requires that you use a work or school email address to sign up. Email addresses provided by consumer email services or telecommunication providers are not allowed. This includes outlook.com, hotmail.com, gmail.com and others. For more details, please review this article.

After you sign in with a Power BI account, you can configure gateway, and the configured gateway will appear under Settings->Manage Gateway in Power BI Servuce, and you can add required data sources within the gateway.

Our customer wants to run service accounts (not allocated to staff) for each environment a gateway is installed.

Do you simply assign each account a power BI license?

@Anonymous,

What do you mean about "Service account"? It doesn't require license to use Power BI gateway.

I mean a user used for the gateway registration that is not tied to a user in the customers tenancy that might leave the organisation. Typically we would call that identity a service user as its not assigned to a staff member, instead a service aka data gateway.

Hence why I have asked the following, if you use a username that subsequently gets disabled or deleted would that impact the data gateway?

  • Is it used purely for gateway registration purposes only?
  • Is it used in the communications with the service bus?

Thanks

Nikolai
