Issues connecting PBI desktop to SSAS 2012 - successful connection but no fields displayed

I've got an issue where a connection to SQL 2012 Analysis Services using live connect is "successful" but no fields are displayed in the designer.

I've got the latest version of PBI desktop installed (2.50.4859.782 64-bit (September 2017)).

We're running SQL 2012 SP2 CU1 (11.0.5532.0) Enterprise edition - which is higher than the minimum required SP1 CU4 as documented here

I've tried different combinations of connecting to it - I'm shown the cube and perspectives in the "Navigator" window and then select the cube and connect - it states "Live connection: connected" but no fields are shown.

I'm able to browse the cube using SSMS, I'm even able to connect using Excel 2013.

One thing I did notice is I'm never asked a username/password in PBI Desktop, for my excel connection to be successful I entered account details.

Is there anything I'm missing?

Hi,

when you connect Power BI to your Analysis services using connection live option, power BI desktop never requests a username/password because it's using your current user/password,  and maybe the user you are logged in doesn't have the right permissions to access the cube.

Probably you must use the same user/password you are using with Excel, to do that you need to store on your client machine the Windows Credentials to access the SSAS server, you can try it...

To Store locally the Windows Credentials, go to "Manage Your Credentials", then click "Add a Windows Credentials"

Internet or network address: the Server where SSAS is running;

User name: the same user name you user in excel to access the cube;

FYI, I've had some issues connecting SSAS Cubes using Power BI Desktop September 2017 Update, but seems solved on the latest update, October 2017 update.

Cheers, Luis
