Hi all, new to Power BI here and looking to connect it to an Azure cloud-based Hortonworks Hadoop Data Lake. This would be via DirectQuery, without storing data outside the Hadoop cluster, due to regulatory considerations. There would also need to be some sort of a reporting server as well to create the reports for end users to consume.
My main questions:
1. Is DirectQuery only possible against Spark and not Hive in a standard Hortonworks distro?
2. From the literature, the Reporting Server is an on-premise reporting machine. Is there a cloud equivalent as I do not want to expand my on-prem infrastructure - is this what Power BI Service is?
3. What changes are happening in Q1 2018 in terms of hosting Power BI Premium workspaces on different O365 tenants? Our corporate tenant is in a different global region, and it would be ideal if we could host within our region, rather than have to have network hits of such distance.
@lmsung,
Firstly, it doesn't support DirectQuery mode for Hortonworks Hadoop in Power BI Desktop, you can check the supported data sources in this article.
But you can create ODBC data source for HortonWorks Hadoop following the instructions in this blog, then connect to the ODBC data source in Power BI Desktop.
Secondly, you can publish your reports from Power BI Desktop to Power BI Service, and add ODBC data source under the gateway following the guide in this similar thread, then refresh your dataset.
Thirdly, there is no official article stating the Q1 2018 changes about Power BI Premium workspaces on different O365 tenants.
Regards,
Lydia
