Power BI Embedded OR POWERBI SERVICE

We are considering making the our visualizations using Power BI for a client and potentially extending to all clients as part of the portal. The data would be powered by ONPREMISE SQL server data.

We currently use tableau. Shall we be using PowerBI embedded or PowerBI service? Please advise. I already created a ticket in support.

Power BI Embedded and the Power BI service are separate offerings. Power BI Embedded is billed and deployed through the Azure portal and is targeted at ISVs and enterprises embedding dashboards in applications for third party use. The Power BI service is billed and deployed through the O365 portal and is a standalone general purpose BI offering primarily targeted at enterprise internal use. For more information on the Power BI service please visit powerbi.com.

Licensing for Microsoft Power BI Embedded

In the Microsoft Power BI Embedded usage model, licensing for Power BI is not the responsibility of the end-user. Instead, sessions are purchased by the developer of the app that is consuming the visuals, and are charged to the subscription that owns those resources.

To me the choice is easy if you consider your user base. If your users will all have Office 365 accounts and Power BI user licences, then use the Power BI service because there is no requirement for custom development. Things just work "out of the box" as they say.

If your users will not have Office 365 accounts and/or Power BI licenses, you cannot use PowerBI.com so you must use Power BI Embedded. When you use PowerBI Embedded, Microsoft charges you per report session instead of charging you in terms of user licenses. This Power BI Embedded approach does require custom development as you must build a custom website to host your reports and dashboard tiles which are embedded on pages using various development techniques.

Note that you can embed reports into a custom application whether you are using PowerBI.com or Power BI embedded. It's just that this custom development approach is optional with PowerBI.com and a requirement with Power BI Emdedded. Note that embedding reports in a custom application provides you with more flexibility in your ability to create a user experience for filtering data, navigating between report pages and making the report with a interactive experience.

@amitloh

PowerBI embedded looks more proper, as per your description, you'll share reports to external users. May I know what is your concern?
