Licensing question for PBI Embedded with External and Internal users

Hey,

We currently have a customer using the old Power BI Embedded in their Customer Portal with around 3 100 customers and 6 000 users (external).

They use one report and a little authentication application which allows for RLS to secure the data which works fine today.

When moving to the new PBI Embedded model it clearly states that it's not meant for internal users but the 3100 reports mentioned above are accessible for the customers internal users, about 500 ppl, for the reasons of support and the initial walktrough of the report with the external customers when they sign up for the customer portal.

We've tried to find some more in-depth information regarding the licensing model but haven't been able to and thus we wonder if PBI Embedded is enough, eventough some internal users can access the report, or if the customer needs PBI Premium or maybe Premium and Embedd license to achive what they have today?

Hi @SPDaniel,

Could be more precisely about the difference External and Internal users when they access the embedded report on their custom portal? Do the internal users need to use their own Power BI account for authentication, but the external users don't?

If you just need to embed Power BI content in a custom portal which can be accessed by External and Internal users, then the PBI Embedded should be enough. Smiley Happy

Power BI now offers three SKUs for embedding: A SKUs, EM SKUs and P SKUs. Which one should I purchase for my scenario?

A SKU (Power BI Embedded) EM SKU (Power BI Premium) P SKU (Power BI Premium)
Purchase Azure portal Office Office
Use cases * Embed content in your own application * Embed content in your own application
* Share content with Power BI FREE users outside PowerBI.com and embed in other SaaS applications (SharePoint, Teams)
* Embed content in your own application
* Share content with Power BI FREE users outside PowerBI.com and embed in other SaaS applications (SharePoint, Teams)
* Share content with Power BI FREE users through PowerBI.com
Billing Hourly Monthly Monthly
Commitment No commitment Yearly Monthly/Yearly
Differentiation Full elasticity- can scale up/ down, pause/ resume resources in Azure portal or through API Can be used to embed content in SharePoint Online and Microsoft Teams Combine embedding in applications and use the Power BI Service in the same capacity

Hey @v-ljerr-msft

Thanks for your Answer.

Neither the internal nor external users need PBI Accounts to authenticate.

The internal users authenticate in the same exact way as the external users and their data is also filtered by RLS and there is a filter for internal users to show them only the data for the customer portal they are visiting for support or guidance.
