License Clarification - Embed for your customers w/ AppOwnsData

We have a POC for a custom application which will access a PowerBI report we have designed and generate an embedded PowerBI link. We will use this to give reporting insights to our customer base without any of the customers being licensed. We do this by using PowerBI's API and authenticate using registered app through to our PowerBI instance. I suspect that to use this we need to set up a PowerBI Premium Per Capacity license for AUD$4,995. Is this correct or are there other licensing models to suit our scenario?

In the tutorial it mentions that Pro license is not required but it does not explain what license is required.

Hi @RhipePowerBI

Embed for customer has two kind of authentication method : Master User or Service Principal.

For reference:  Step 1 - Select your authentication method

If you use Master User as your authentication method, you need to make sure the account you use has Pro or Premium Per User license.

  • Power BI Pro license - This will be your master user and your app will use it to authenticate to Power BI.

  • A Power BI Premium Per User (PPU) license - This will be your master user and your app will use it to authenticate to Power BI.

If you use Service Principal as your authentication method you don't need an account, you may refer to this blog: Embed Power BI content with service principal and an application secret

You customer will use the embed token you give to them to get access to embed report. If you don't have Power BI Premium, Power BI will give you free embed token in your developerment. But Embed token has a quantity limitation.

For reference: How many embed tokens can I create?

So when you are ready to use your embed report in your portal, you need to assign the workspace into Capacity.
