Best Approach to share reports as a Power BI template or give build permissions in Power BI Service

Hi All,

What is the best practice to use and create PowerBI reports from already built reports and not from scratch?

As per my knowledge, I understand that we can share the template with the users and they can start building reports accordingly.
But that requires access to Database credentials as well (if the user wants to look into the data).

The second option would be to give them build permissions (in a workspace for a dataset) in Power BI Service and they can create reports/ save a copy of their own and build their reports on top of that. But it has few limitations as the user won't be able to model and can not create their own calculated columns with DAX expressions.

Which one is a better approach if building DAX expressions and data modeling is not a concern?

Hi @Anonymous ,

"Which one is a better approach if building DAX expressions and data modeling is not a concern?"

If other users just work at the visualization level based on the existing dataset, it is of course better to give them editing permissions on the dataset.

If the work done by other users is more at the data model level, then they need to work in Desktop, you need to provide them with templates or allow them to download .pbix files in the Service.

If the work done by other users is more at the visualization level and does not care about the data model, then they can complete the work in the Service (build permission).
