API Data source, auto-update

Simple question but everything iI can seems to indicate that this is way more complicated than it should be. I am making a simple API request to recieve data. The main thing is that I would like for a change in the data to automatically be reflected in my dataset, without having to manually refresh the data, and without scheduling refreshes, and without using refresh APIs (which are in any case time limited) and without doing a live data stream since I want to bind the data to a custom visual. Shouldn't there just be some sort of event listener that can detect changes in the source?

Am I missing something? Is this in fact a complicated request? Can anyone help?
