using card with states

Hello all,

I have had some help identifying card with states as a solution for changing font color depending on a data value (negative, positive).

I am very confused as to which fields to add to the visualization.  The measure that I want to evaluate I refer to as 'gain or loss'.

How to establish the target, and where do I store it? 

What is the states measure? States? 

Gain or loss is a measure that does not use a trend axis.

I am confident that if these questions can be answered within the forum that I can use this visual easily.  All the blogs and advice I have received so far assume a level of understanding I just don't have.
