use calculated column for x axis on bar chart

There is a text column named Actual that sometimes lists dates, sometimes lists 'Missing'.

I have a seperate column calculated with this formula.:

[Actual Date] = if(SEARCH("-",'readin'[Actual], 1, -1) > 1,FORMAT('readin'[Actual] ,"YYYYMMDD") )

I want to use the month and date of [Actual Date] as the X axis on a bar chart. Do I need to join a date table to [Actual]? Is there a way to designate it as a Date without joining a Date table or calculating[Actual Month] and [Actual Year] in seperate columns?

Thanks in advance

@jch I think I need to look at your pbix file, seems like you are making it over complicated. Share the sample file and remove sensitive information before sharing.

@jch do you have a date dimension, if not add one following my blog post and then use the month from date dimension on x-axis.

I appreciate your help. I added a Date Table and tried to created a relationship between these 2 fields

1. Actual Date = if(SEARCH("-",'readin'[Actual], 1, -1) > 1,DATEVALUE('readin'[Actual]))

2, DateKey = DATEVALUE(DimDate[Date])

But I get this error

and the bar chart looks like this

@jch make it a date type

[Actual Date] = if(SEARCH("-",'readin'[Actual], 1, -1) > 1,DATEVALUE('readin'[Actual]))

as a best practice, you should always add a date dimension when working with dates.

That solution shows the year but not the month in the x axis. Binning the field doesn't work either. (see screenshot below)POWER BI.png
