Since the last Power BI update (November) I run into a problem where I cannot refresh data anymore.
Error message: ssl provider error 0 - the certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted.
I first checked with our department to see if there were any ssl related issues, but that was not the case.
Then I found out that the problem does not occur in older Power BI versions. (in this case, in the Power BI October update no error occurs and data is loading fine. It seems the error was introduced with Power BI november update.
Steps I performed to test things out:
- Create a new blank Power BI report.
- Get Data / SQL Server (and filled the server, database and credentials).
In Power BI october update, it works fine without any problems.
When I perform exactly the same steps in Power BI november update then the ssl provider error pops up and data is not loaded.
Please advise
Thanks!
Emile
Hi @Anonymous
As tested with Version: 2.76.5678.541 64-bit (December 2019)(download from Microsoft Store), it could connect to SQL Server successfully.
From the error message, it seems this is not a power bi desktop issue.
Please check the solutions from this thread.

Hi,
I followed the thread and tried to make the same connection to the database in Excel.
This connection works fine.
So to summarize:
- Power BI (October update) : Connecting to the server/database works fine
- Power BI (November update): Doesn't work, the 'SSL Provider error 0' pops up
- Excel : Connecting to the server/database works fine
Any suggestions please?
Please help with this issue, thanks in advance
Best regards
Emile
Hi @Anonymous
Please check if the lastest version 2019/12 works.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/desktop-latest-update
If the issue still occurs, you could open a support ticket to get further help.

Thanks for your reaction.
As mentioned when I use the October version it still works fine at this moment. When I use the November version, the error is shown and data cannot be refreshed. If it was caused by something else, then you would expect that the same error would occur in the October version, but that is not the case.
Update 20-12:
I installed the latest version (december update) but the same error still occurs.
So to summarize:
Connection to the SQL Server database still works good in an older version of Power BI (october).
The SSL error occurs only in the November and December update.
Already tested: Connection to the same database from Excel works fine.
Please advise
Thanks!
