When I tried it, it didn't work and BI suggested it was due to string value. Now this Super User comes along and suggests my earlier thought and it just does somehow work.... how....? (rhetorical)

I was wondering because it seemed like you had done that for VAR2. Perhaps you used a numerica aggregation before like SUMX?
I think it is most likely that I made an error in my context which made it happen that one of the applied filters wasn't working, thus you would have multiple results. Something that might break it, I assume.
