publisher for excel -connect to reports

newbie question

My colleague shared a dashboard with me.

i want to connect to its underline "reports"via excel. However I couldnt see that under My Workspace.

I had installed Excel poublisher.

Do I need PowerBi Pro to be able to do this?

Many thanks

Pedzilla

Yes, you need the pro service to use content packs. You don't need Pro to use Analyse in Excel, as long as you can see the data set. So if you load the data set yourself in your own workspace, then it will work. Sor for the confusion.

No you don't need pro. Read about the latest version of the software to do this at my blog here. http://exceleratorbi.com.au/direct-connect-excel-power-bi-service/

I want to query the reports / datasets behind a dashboard that has been shared with me. When I looked in my workspace I couldnt see that.

Thanks for the article you sent to me but am I misreading it - it said I need powerbi pro?

Yes you are misreading it and no, you do not need a pro account.

This is your issue.  You can only query datasets where that you have access to.  When someone shares a dashboard with you, you do not get access to the data set, just the visualisations.  They should share with you via a workgroup or a content pack.  Read my article about sharing here http://exceleratorbi.com.au/top-tips-for-sharing-content-using-power-bi/

@MattAllington Thank you for your reply.

So it looks like Power Bi Pro is a pre-req for what I want to do if I understand this correctly because in order to get content pack I need Pro and end user also need Pro license too?

Oh, and yes - everyone that participated in the sharing process (ie creates content pack or accesses content pack) will need the licence. To be fair, $120 per year is a bargain for this quality of software. Tableau is $1,600 up front plus $320 per year maintenance.
