Power BI contains Power BI desktop ( authoring tool) and Power BI service (deploy and share reports). While in Excel, Power Pivot, Power Map and Power View are Excel add-ins. It's hard to say whether the Power BI desktop is faster than those Excel add-ins, performance can be affected by many factors, like how you write Power Query, Excel or Power BI desktop version, etc. We should consider this issue in a specific scenario. But in my opinion, I prefer Power BI desktop and Power BI Service. It's more convenient to use Power BI desktop to model data and create reports, as there are lots of OOTB features for us to manipulate data. You can get study from this Transform and shape data and Model your data sections from this site. Also each month a new Power BI desktop version will be released. Power BI as a modern BI product, I believe it will be better and better.
