parameterised datasets based on user input - best way to achieve

Hi,

If have a large dataset and want to limit the dataset to those rows interested in based on user input rather than bring everything in and then filter afterwards which would in any case exceed the 1gb file size limit in power bi pro.

e.g rather than import all calendar years - import just calendar data for year = year input by user

then import the sales data for that calendar year.

How can this best be achieved in power bi?

Thanks

See if this YouTube video on Direct Query helps...  I also pulled some notes from the Microsoft Docs below...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usWa892e4Gc

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/desktop-use-directquery

Benefits of using DirectQuery

There are a few benefits to using DirectQuery:

  • DirectQuery lets you build visualizations over very large datasets, where it would otherwise be unfeasible to first import all of the data with pre-aggregation
  • Underlying data changes can require a refresh of data, and for some reports, the need to display current data can require large data transfers, making re-importing data unfeasible. By contrast, DirectQuery reports always use current data
  • The 1-GB dataset limitation does not apply to DirectQuery

Thanks for suggestion - in our case the underlying queries would take way more than 30 secs thus direct query not practical for us in this case - we wish for the data to be imported in quiet hours.

Any other thoughts parameterised datasets based on user input with import mode?
