model object name longer than 512 characters

I am importing an excel sheet that has over 100 columns into power BI desktop. Some of these columns have titles that are longer than 512 characters. Which results in a warning message.

Is there a way around this without manually doing this on excel?

Is there a shortcut on power BI for this?

I have this same issue.

The text variable is a documentation thread. is there a work around to extend this variable to load more than 512 characters?  We can limit the characters as that would compromise the integrity of that variable.

Hi @craig-bowyer,

In your scenario, how did you get data? Import workbook or connect to worksheet?

If you are importing workbook, maximum number of characters in a table or column name is 100 characters. Please take a look at this article: Data Model specification and limits.

Hi @v-qiuyu-msft,

I got the data by Get data > excel and imported the workbook.

Is there a way to increase the model object name longer than the 512 characters as shown in the screenshots?

Kind regards,

Craig

Hi @craig-bowyer,

Sorry for the late response.

In your scenario, I would suggest you decrease mode object name length before importing to Power BI in Excel to meet the data model limitation.

If issue persists, would you mind share the workbook for our analysis?
