First sorry if this post sounds paranoid, but due to the current affair of powerBI service, it seems everything is possible.

is there any time limit inside PowerBI desktop, can we keep using the same version without any update, it is used only as a standalone scenario, no requirement for PowerBI service or gateway.

Yes, you can use the same version without any update. There is no time limit as such.
However, you will miss out on following if you stop taking updates:

1. You will not be able to open any pbix file which has been created in Power BI Desktop post your version.
2. You will miss out on new features coming in for the existing visuals and in Power BI Editor which is making Power BI more and more superior.
3. You might be stuck due to some issue caused by a possible bug in your version which may have been fixed in post versions.

I would recommend you to keep taking monthly updates as Microsoft releases them even if you dont require Power BI service and gateway.
