error for new coloumn formula

What is the "current month","previous month"?

For example, when event date=2018/11/15, is this date equal to "previous month" or not?

Current month is basically June 2019 and anything prior to June 2019 is previous month

 Create a column like

column = 
IF([event_date]=BLANK(),"upcoming",
IF([event_date]<DATE(YEAR(today()),MONTH(today()),1),"YTD",
FORMAT([event_date],"mmm-yyy")))
