Why is the value of the measure different when i store it in a variable?

I have a measure that calculates the travel times.  I store it in a variable inside another measure.  When i use this variable in a calculate function, the value is different then when i use the measure explicity in the same calculate function.  What can i do to retain its original value of the measure when storing it in a variable? Thanks
