What is the best way to connect a sql server db in a VM in Azure from the Power BI Desktop

I have data that is hosted in a SQl Server Database in a VM in Azure. I would like to know what would be the best way to connect to the database?

In that video, the guy skips past a warning about "Encryption Suport" which is saying that the connection is not encrypted.  This would surely be unacceptable for most people.  Is this just a configuration setting in the SQL server?
