Using a lookup table for a calculated column AND a relationship at the same time -- is it possible?

I have a dataset (main table) with a numeric value that's binned based on another table created via manual table entry.

The bin table has a category name field, which is the field used to relate to the main table, and also what's dragged into visuals. These categories are sorted by a separate sort order column because they have labels that aren't just numbers.

Originally in the main table I just had a nested if calculated column to assign the 6 possible bin categories. This allowed for a relationship between the two tables. It's tedious to edit, so  I tried automating like this:

Category =
var val = 'Main Table'[Value]
return
CALCULATE(
                    MAXX('Bin Table','Bin Table'[Category]),
                     'Bin Table'[Floor] <= val,
                     'Bin Table'[Ceilling] >= val )

The formula works as intended, but not if the relationship to the bin table is active. Is there some more refined DAX I could use to have both the relationship and calculated column based on the same table? To be clear I want to calculate Category, and then also create a relationship based on it.

I understand I could duplicate the bin table and have one for each purpose, but that doesn't feel like the 'proper' solution to me.

Thanks,
Braunnz
