Hi,
In our environment we still have some on-prem data sources (MS SQL database), now we are rolling our InTune managed device and they are not bound to AD. Connecting to a MS SQL data source from on-prem, our users cannot use their service accounts to access the database. When using Power BI Desktop, using DOMAIN\username on Alternative Credentials for Get Data Source does not work for this. If we will use the Microsoft Account mode, the authentication fails due to certificate chain trust.
May I know if anyone have navigated on this type of user story? 🙂
Thank you!
Hi @CryptoAdmin,
According to your description, it seems like you are work with the dynamic endpoint datasource so that they can't link with common authorization modes and credentials that power bi provided, right?
If this is a case, power bi not well to handle this scenario. I'd like to suggest you do some external tools/operations to manage these dynamic changes on the data source endpoint.
For example:
Deploy a web service/ rest API to access the remote endpoint of data sources with specific crentadails and return data tables.
Then you can use power bi web connector to get data from above web service/rest api to get the result tables.

@CryptoAdmin , Not very Clear. But when we deploy any thing usql MS SQL Server if finally use the windows account of that machine(central mahine) or service account.
Hi, @amitchandak. I've modified the question, but our case is about connecting the MS SQL on-prem to our Power BI Desktop. Since our device is not bound to Active Directory anymore and we are using service accounts to pull data from our on-prem database. The authentication fails if we use the Windows mode as authentication method.
