UK Shape Map

Hello -

I am looking to use a shape map for the UK and I know Power BI allows you to add your own Shape Map, but I am looking for a UK Map by Postal Code.

Does anyone know where I can find that and how to use it in Power BI?  I need help quickly if possible!

Cheers!

Ryan

Hi,

Has anyone created additional Shape Map of the UK besides the one by counties?  I have tried various geosources.  Yet, at the moment, I am not sure how to use the fields of "Areashape" or "Lengthshape".  Any tips?

Thanks,

Cheryl

Hi @Fitin1rb ,

Have you managed to find a solution to your question on UK JSON maps?

If not, please find some links to other, absolutely fab tech geeks; like us, who have created some very useful map-related resources; and specifically, UK map files:

1) Do-It-Your-Self Option via the Geo Json site: http://geojson.io : here you can click and build your own poly shape over the top of a map. The site then lets you export the end result as a json, ready for uploading into Power BI, awesome.

2) David Eldersveld Git Hub Site: @deldersveld , David is like the father Chrismas of Json map files. David has built up a great library of GeoJson files for most of the worlds major countries and cities

Davids Git Hub Site: https://github.com/deldersveld/topojson/blob/master/countries/united-kingdom/uk-counties.json

Davids' Power BI blog on Json mapping visual: https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Issues/polygon-mapping-power-BI-Desktop/idc-p/164475#M6542

@ruthpozuelo Ruth's Video explains how to make use of David's files and the map keys you need to map to your postcode lookup table: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hzy1YbTjDaA

3) Martin Chorley (aka martinjc ) also has topoJSON files for:

> Local Authority Districts (LAD), Eurostat boundaries (NUTS level 1 & 2) for England, Scotland and Wales and a few others.

Martin's Git Hub Site: https://github.com/martinjc/UK-GeoJSON
Martin's bespoke Json map website: https://martinjc.github.io/UK-GeoJSON/

4) Last but not list is the official UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) Open Geography portal which should have the official up to date Geocode maps and info for all the different types of map data related to the UK:
http://geoportal.statistics.gov.uk/search?q=Hierarchical%20Representation%20of%20UK%20Statistical%20... ;

I must say I did find this site difficult to pinpoint what I wanted, so I can't 100% say you will find a usable Json file here.

If any of the above help (which I’m sure one of them will), please mark this as your accepted solution. 🤗👍🏾

Hi Josh

Not sure if this is still a topic of interest for you.  I am also keen to try and use map locations in my PowerBI.  I am new to JSON files, and I will admit also GIThub, and how to use them effectively.

So my presentation, a simple exercice, is to show UK Counties and data relating to UK Bee Statistics.  I have set my Data Catagory accordingly which is fine up to a point however it does pick up Counties that are elsewhere, for examle 'Inverness' in UK and USA which is not what I want.   Are you able to offer any advice on this topic or maybe this is not suitable subject for this particualr thread.

I had a look at one of the examples you mentioned here:

https://github.com/deldersveld/topojson/blob/f2c886b8d235c6157641f8bbf55a59400ab21751/README.md

But its more my lack of knowledge on this stubject that I could not get this to work right for me.

Many thanks.

Chris

@Fitin1rb  Please assign a Data Category as Postal Code to your postcode field in the table.

Hey @PattemManohar thanks for responding. I tried your suggestion, but that did not do anything for me.

I am looking to use a shape map as well, so I believe I would have to add my own TopoJSON map (I have never done this) with the Postcode as the boundaries to use.  I am looking to see if anyone knows if this type of map is available to use anywhere and if so how can get it, add it to my PBI report.

Thanks
Ryan
