Time Series and Gender Data

Hi everyone,

I am trying to graph some demographic data from 2016-2019. My goal is to have a stacked column chart with five (5) columns, and within those columns there is one separation (the stacks will be gender, columns race). Everytime I try to do this, I am only able to graph one (1) column, rather than 5. The closest I've gotten is 4 columns, one for each year, with everything stacked on top of one another. The option for grouping together my values is either greyed out or does not work the way I need it to. I am beginning to worry that this is something Power BI can't do, but I highly doubt this is the case. This is my first time really using the platform, so I'm sure there is just an option I haven't explored yet.

sample data is as follows:

black female: 46

black male: 78

asian female: 8

asian male: 10

white female: 288

white male: 702

hispanic female: 5

hispanic male: 24

other female: 0
other male: 6

@theliliw oh this is easy:

you stacked bar chart, put race column on x-axis, gender on legend and numbers on value and it would give you what you are looking for.

should i make a table splitting everything up like that? the way i gave the sample data is the way it is in my table. one column is AAF, the second is AAM, etc., etc.

@theliliw I though you shared sample data as you have the raw data. is that not the case , sorry bit confused.

so i'm not sure that i would be able to separate everything into legend/axis/value. i have data like this for 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019, so this is just the 2017 data. does that clear up any confusion? sorry about that!

@theliliw do one favour, put sample data in excel file (as raw data) and highlight the columns that are important for this post and share it thru one drive/google drive otherwise we will keep going in circles.
