Stop auto upgrade on PBI Desktop Optimized for Report Server

Hello all,

Thanks for all your help throughout the years (this is actually my first post).

I use PBI Report Server Jan 2020 and to develop the reports I use PBI Desktop Optimized for Report Server (Jan 2020).

My problem is that now the app keeps updating itself to a newer version (May 2020) but since I haven't updated the server yet I can't be developing reports in the newer version.

My question is, does anyone know on how to stop PBI Desktop Optimized for Report Server from upgrading to a newer version?

I do understand, that this feature is perfect from someone who develops reports to the Cloud, but not when using Report Server.

Thank you very much.

Kind regards,

João Correia

Hi @Anonymous ,

I would not know that a Power BI Desktop installation updates itself automatically.

Is it possibly via software distribution via your IT?

Thank you all for your messages.

This is the first time I had this "issue" because my previous PBI Desktop for RS version needed to be manually upgraded as well as the Report Server.

I googled and I couldn't find anyone mentioning this. I know that the PBI Desktop for Cloud has this behaviour if you install via Microsoft Store, but not for the Report Server optimized, it doesn't make sense.

I don't believe my IT did anything, because I was the one to install the Jan 2020 version on my laptop.

I know I can upgrade the version in the server and I know how because I did it previously, but wasn't my intention to when a new version is out.

Thank you.

Kind regards,

João Correia

Hi @Anonymous ,

Currently, users need to upgrade Power BI Desktop optimized for Power BI Report Server manually .The easiest way is to start from the web portal of your report server.   Or go to the Power BI Report Server home page and select Advanced download options.

@Anonymous

I fully agree with @mwegener  - I've never ever heard about auto update before

Maybe you mean App from Microsoft AppStore?

Yes, but the AppSource app is not Report Server Optimized and is not installed via MSI file.

Hello,

Apparently there is someone to blame, my IT.

They did this without the knowledge of our team.

Thank you everyone.
