Slicer-based date range used as parameters for calculated column

Hi,

I have an issue that I've been trying to solve for quite some time and haven't been able to find any similiar posts on this forum.

The issue I have is I can't find a way to have my model dynamically adjust to a user-defined baseline period. More specifically, I have a series of columns that take the performance of what I'm calling "the measure period" and comparing it to a "baseline period". ie. comparing Q1 2019 to full year 2018. I would need the measure period (Q1 2019) to be adjustable with a slicer, and the baseline period (FY 2018) to also be adjustable yet independent of the measure period. I've seen posts where this is accomplished through measures, however I'm wondering if this is possible to do within calculated columns instead. The comparison is being made over a somewhat large amount of categories that cannot be determined until the query is imported and so I don't think measures will work.

Thank you,

James

I found the solution. The answer was that measures were the correct method and the issue with dynamic layers in my dataset was solved by creating a summary table that had added columns as references to the different periods. If anyone else is trying to do something similar I’d be happy to share a sample.

@xyz123ABC ,

To be general, calculate column can't interact with slicer because calculate column is created in model level while visuals and measures are in representation level. If possible, could you share some details about your requirement and share some sample data as well?
