Sept 2020 Desktop Update Error SQL Server during Pre-Login Handshake

We upgraded 3 installations of Power BI Desktop version 2.84.981.0 64-bit (Aug 2020) to version 2.28.681.0 64-bit (Sept 2020) and when we attempted to connect to SQL Server 2019, we received the following error:

Unable to connect

We encountered an error while trying to connect.  Details:  "Microsoft SQL:  A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occured during the pre-login handshake (provider:  HTTP Provider, error: 0 -)"

The 4th installation of Power BI Desktop, which did not get upgraded and was still on the old version, continued to work.  We have reinstalled the August 2020 version on the 3 machines and it is working again.

Hi @Anonymous ,

Update:

It is a known issue comfirmed by engineers:

Power BI customers using the September(SU09) Gateway or Power BI desktop with an on-premises SQL data source that has a self-signed certificate and "Force Encryption" set to Yes may experience issues with reports using Import or Direct Query modes and see the message "A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake". As a workaround, customers can install a previous version of Gateway and Desktop versions as needed. Engineers have identified the root cause and an ETA for a fix will be provided soon.

Best Regards,
Yingjie Li

Hi @Anonymous ,

Please check that if you have added the TCP port and UDP port(1434) in the inbound rule of the Windows Firewall, and you can verify TCP port in SQL Server Configuration Manager.
For more details about configuring remote access for SQL Server, please review the following blog.
https://blog.citrix24.com/configure-sql-express-to-accept-remote-connections/

In addition, the latest version of power bi desktop is 2.85.681.0 Sept 2020, you can check this version could help you.

I am seeing this error with the Sept 2020 desktop update also.

The same SQL Server connection works with August 2020 PBI Desktop.
