Scheduled refresh fails when VPN is disabled

Good afternoon,

I've used Power BI for a good couple of years now however I don't have a mass of experience in gateways / VPN's, scheduled refreshes etc.

I have reports running with data from SQL server and after installing a personal gateway on my machine and setting up Scheduled-Refresh my reports now refresh themselves accordingly.

The problem I have however is that when my device is not connected to the VPN (I have to use this to connect to SQL server), it's unable to refresh the reports and the scheduled-refresh falls over.

Is there a way for me to have it so I don't need to be on the VPN on my machine for the scheduled refresh to work? I appreciate the issue is security related as I'm unable to access the DB without a VPN, but surely there's a way to have it refresh even when i'm not on my computer?

Any advice would be fantastic, and hope the above makes sense 🙂

Hi @JordanPearson ,

@JordanPearson  as @mwegenersuggested it is not scalable to use the personal gateway as everything will be dependent when your machine is online, is it on the same network (like need VPN) to access the database. To a more scalable and efficient solution, Power BI Gateway should reside on a server like a machine, which is running 24 x 7 and have access to on-prem data sources.

Thank you both for your help!

I had a feeling it'd require me to add a gateway outside of my machine, but good to get a second opinion and a full explanation.
