Scheduled or auto-refresh for desktop version

I have created a dashboard in Power BI Desktop and published it. If I share this Dashboard with my colleagues is there any way for the Data in the Dashboard to be automatically refreshed so they can see the most recent version? The Data I am using for the dashboard comes from a SQL Server and I Imported the data.

Hi @ecroke,

You have to set up a gateway in order to have your information update automatically, please refer to

Hi

I hope you know that we have two options available in SQL Server i.e Import and Direct Query.

If you choose Import then it will import all your data to Power BI Service (cloud) and show the report and dashboard from your data. In this case, data is very close to reporting and it will not look for data changes.

In case, if you choose Direct Query, then data will remain in your on-premises and only the data required for a report will send to Power BI via personal or enterprise gateway. In this scenario, we have an option to set up a dataset refresh (schedule).

Make sure you are using Direct Query mode and look for schedule refresh in dataset section under settings.

Thanks

Hari

@Anonymous When creating it I used Import as got the data from a SQL server and I needed to add extra fields to the data. Is there any way of changing it to a direct query?

There is a chance to change from DirectQuery to Import but you can't change from Import to Direct Query. You need to build the model in Direct Query from scratch.
