SQL or PowerQuery

For me as a new user its a bit hard to understand what approach is best in Power BI.

I am used to write (within my knowledge) a small SQL to get the data that is required, then I use relations to link

this to other tables.

This avoids (I think) a lot of data to be imported, but I am not sure if it would be better.

If I don't write an SQL I need to import 2 Tables Table "X" with +1000 lines and table "Y" +500K lines.

If I do write the SQL then I only need one table this results in only 100K of lines.

What would be the regular best approach?

Do everything in Power Query step by step so all actions / filters etc. are visible?

Or

Build an SQL with the proper filtering and avoid most lines to be imported in the first place.

PS. once build these "filters" do not change often, but the refreshments are done daily.

Thanks
