SQL Server data course, Database Views and the tempdb

I am looking for some technical information

Datasoure: SQL Server Database - using Database Views - Import Queries

This is the operating framework for our PowerBI solutions.

In many instances the size of the SQL Server tempdb increases in size more than double the size of the source database itself.

While the tempdb shrinks in size with a SQL Restart - Can someone please tell me what part the tempdb plays in a SQL Server database load in the PowerBI desktop ?

I have searched far and wide but all I read is posts where people are instructued to increase the size of this database - no explanation as to when it uses this database and how to minimise the size impacts via queries.

Please advise.

Hi @shaunwilks ,

For your first question, "While the tempdb shrinks in size with a SQL Restart - Can someone please tell me what part the tempdb plays in a SQL Server database load in the PowerBI desktop ? ", you may refer to the link: https://www.microsoftpressstore.com/articles/article.aspx?p=2233324&seqNum=3 .

For your second question , you can refer to the links:

Thanks

I am familiar with these sorts of posts as our database is housed on a SQL Server.

What I am looking for is information on what exactly PowerBI is doing in there.

Our PBI solutions are sourced from VIEWS on the database.

The views can be accessed by any other third party application without the tempdb growing rapdily.

However when you refresh your PBI solution from those views the tempdb can in some cases grow drastically.

Having to restart the SQL Server Engine after every time Its not really a solution to advise.

Failure to restart the service leaves the database at huge levels.

So as its PowerBI Desktop growing the size of the database I would like to know what impacts on the size of that growth and what ways us as developers writing the Database queries can minimise the size of the growth.
