Risk of publishing PowerBI report with commercial data

Hi all,

My company uses Tableau as BI tool. Personally I use PowerBI to do analysis and share few reports with team members.

I have two questions regarding license and data security:

1/ I downloaded PowerBI desktop for free - but for some reasons I can use PowerBI Pro functions such as mail subscription and analyse in Excel. Anyone know why?

2/ When I publish the report to PowerBI service, my understanding is that the report data will be stored in the nearest Microsoft data centre. Will that be a compliance issue in my company since it is commercial data?

It is so easy to use PowerBI for daily analysis. But i don't want to get into any compliance trouble ( if any!) by publishing / sharing the report.

Can anyone advice me so I can check with relevant folks in my company?

Thanks a lot.

Hi @irenelitw629

1. You should probably use the pro trial for 60 days, please refer to https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-admin-licensing-organization#power-bi-pro-trial-fo...

2. This article describes Power BI security by providing an explanation of the Power BI architecture, then explaining how users authenticate to Power BI and data connections are established, and then describing how Power BI stores and moves data through the service. The last section is dedicated to security-related questions, with answers provided for each.

The compliance issue mostly depends on the user's operation, if you share the report/dashboard in public...Power bi won't put data under the risky environment,  moreover, pro and premium licenses would provide much more safe choices when you cooperate with your coworkers.
