Reading Always Encrypted columns from Azure SQL in PowerBI

Hi, we have a project requirement that we need to read data from a Azure SQL where there is sensitive data visible only to selected users - does PowerBI support reading and rending encrypted data

Note: Users with access to view the report have the certificate containing the key to decrpyt the data.

The data is visibile in SSMS after enabling the "column encryption setting = enabled" setting but just appears as binary while connecting and reading from the data source in PowerBI

Thanks!

Sumanth

Hi, @Sumanth23

Based on your description, I assume that you want to convert binary to hex or text. If so, you may try the following M code to see if it works.

= Table.AddColumn(Source, "Custom", each Binary.ToText([a],BinaryEncoding.Base64))
or
= Table.AddColumn(#"Added Custom", "Custom.1", each Binary.ToText([a],BinaryEncoding.Hex))

For further information, you may refer Binary.ToText ,Converting Binary to hex value or numeric value .

Best Regards

Allan
