Re-naming the columns in BI desktop

Hello People,

I need to rename the columns in one report. Without affecting other reports that use the same dataset.

So, I have a dataset out of which I have created a number of different reports.

The supplier's data in the reports have a Code i.e. Supplier #1 Supplier #2 Supplier #3 and so on in all the reports.

Now, I want to show the actual suppliers' name in one of the reports. To do so, I opened the respective .pbix file on the desktop and tried to transform the data. But, It display's me the below message.

Any help will be appreciated!

@AbbasG  Just double click the column name and you can rename it, or Right Click on a column to rename:

If you need to change the values within a column, you may need to add a table with Supplier ID and Supplier Name columns and relate that to the existing Supplier ID column.

@AbbasG  You're using a Live Connection to dataset so cannot make any changes. You can swap to Direct Query by clicking that 'Add a local model' button. This will give you some functionality, but you still won't be able to Transform the Dataset queries. You will be able to rename columns now and add SOME DAX (but not All DAX functions are available on Direct Query).

@AllisonKennedy Thank you for the response.

I have added the local model. Now the storage mode shows as below.

@AllisonKennedy It allows me to rename the column. "V name". But I need to change the name for "V1" V2" "V3" and so on.

I tried to achieve this by "transform data" but it takes me to a blank page as below.

@AbbasG Correct, the best way to rename V1, V2, etc is probably to create a table, then relate it with 1 to many relationship to your table in the existing Dataset using the V Number to the orignal VName column.

V Number V Name
V1 Supplier Name 1
V2 Supplier Name 2
V3 Supplier Name 3

Hopefully that makes sense?
