RLS using a DataFlow in DirectQuery mode

Hello,

I have RLS enabled and he users table comes from a DataFlow in DirectQuery. RLS is working fine in desktop.

In the service however no visuals are displayed with the following error:

Couldn't load the data for this visual

An error was encountered during the evaluation of the row level security expression defined on table 'T'. Error message: {"error":{"code":"DMTS_MonikerWithUnboundDataSources","pbi.error":{"code":"DMTS_MonikerWithUnboundDataSources","details":[{"code":"Server","detail":{"type":1,"value":"DB"}},{"code":"Database","detail":{"type":1,"value":"db_name"}},{"code":"ConnectionType","detail":{"type":0,"value":"Sql"}}],"exceptionCulprit":1}}}

where T is the import mode table that is filtered by RLS, DB is the server where the db_name data source that is in import mode resides.

Thank you!

Hi @Anonymous,

What type of data source are you worked on? If you mean AS data source, I think you may need some UPN settings on power bi service side:

OK, so long story:

  • the model in PBI Desktop is a mixed storage one, SQL data source is import and PBI DataFlow is DirectQuery
  • user table comes from the DataFlow which is in DirectQuery
  • RLS works in PBI Desktop
  • RLS errors out in the service
  • after digging a bit together with folks from Microsoft support we noticed that this is not related to RLS but to the interaction between DQ and Import
  • even with no RLS the service was complaining about no gateway being available despite there being no refresh triggered or needed
  • once a gateway was referenced (again, there's no need for one since I am not triggering the SQL data source refresh in the service) everything seems to be working

I'm still testing this though.

The error messages are highly cryptic 🙂

Thank you!

Hi @Anonymous,

According to your description, this issue sounds more relate to reports that include different mode data sources. (AFAIK, DAX expression has different usage limits when you work on different connection modes) Perhaps you can directly contact to power bi support team for further support.

In addition, thanks for your sharing, I think they will help with other users who faced similar scenarios.🙂
