Q&A creating strange relationship

Hoping someone might have an idea for this one. I have been testing Q&A in my data model and have a funny situation. When I reference a particular combination of measure and dimension in the Q&A and use the "Turn this Q&A Result Into A Standard Visual" it produces filters against two tables that have nothing to do with the measure. The tables are related to the dimension, but nothing in the question should be referencing them.

For example, if I use the question "show physical sales for brand A" it seems to recognise everything in the question, but the number isn't quite right. When I turn it into a visual to see what is going wrong it includes a filter for the orders table and the product pictures table - not columns in those tables but the entire table. Both of these tables have one-way relationships to the sales table where the sales measure lives, and relationships to the product table, but I don't understand why the filters are getting generated. If I remove them from the filters panel the number comes back correct. If I use a different measure from the same table with the same brand in the question it doesn't generate the filters.

I am totally baffled, and not sure what would cause this sort of behaviour. Tried performance analyser to see under the hood but you can't generate a query from the Q&A visual. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any idea of how to debug it?

Hi @Anonymous ,

You can view what Vanessafvg has proposed and I hope the following link could help you:

Thanks for posting, but this article is completely missing the point. I know how Q&A works, the Q&A recognises the questions, and phrasing and question structure isn't the issue.

This is really about how Q&A makes associations when it generates a query behind the scenes. How is it deciding to include a filter to a related table when there is nothing in the context of the question that refers to that table, and nothing in the measures being asked about that have dependencies on these tables. Why would it choose to include them as filters on my results?

I really appreciate people taking the time to throw suggestions out there, but this isn't a basic "How to" Q&A question. I need advise from someone who really understands the nuts and bolts of Q&A and its query generation process, rather than the basics of terms and phrases.

Hi @Anonymous ,

I know you can't share the model but can you at least share how the table are related (the ones on the question itself and the other two that appear on the Q&A. Just a simple thing like:

Sales Table - Date, Customer, amount

Date Table - Date - links to Date of sales (many to one)

Customer - Customer, Name, - Links to Sales customer

So I can create a mockup and check if I can replicate.

Miguel Félix

have you tried reviewing the Q and A settings at all?

Yes - we use the Q&A settings in depth with managing terms, reviewing questions and constructing definitions. Our Q&A usage is pretty well developed and works well with almost all datasets. This isn't a new setup, or first time experimenting with Q&A.

Just to clarify though, I have checked for auto-suggestions that might be using the same terms and confusing Q&A, have reviewed every table for fields that shouldn't be included in Q&A and excluded them, gone through the newer "Teach" section looking for definitions that might have been setup that would be dragging in the other tables but there are none... I can find nothing linking these tables together in Q&A settings and nothing to suggest why this behaviour is happening... kind of why I was hoping someone might have a more specific example of something that might cause it.

I feel like it might be something with a userelationship or a lookupvalue in a dax measure forcing a relationship which Q&A reads as a dependent filter, but there is nothing in the measure in question. Can other measures in the table effect the way Q&A builds its relationships and decides its mechanisms? Does anyone on here have any understanding of Q&As logic under the hood and how it constructs its queries?

I see!

have you gone through these links at all?

Hi @Anonymous ,

I cannot replicate your issue can you please share a mockup data or sample of your PBIX file. You can use a onedrive, google drive, we transfer or similar link to upload your files.

If the information is sensitive please share it trough private message.

Sorry but I can't. The data model is very large and contains market sensitive client data that I am not allowed to share externally, and recreating the model would take hours and hours to load some sample data which may or may not suffer the same problem when put under the Q&A microscope.

I was really hoping someone might have seen an example of this before and might give me an idea of where to look next or some insight as to how Q&A is making these associations.
