PowerBI on Cloud

Hi

need some guidance on how to setup my existing PowerBI desktop on a virtual cloud machine.

Current Setup : I have a PBI desktop file on my local laptop; I refresh it daily, and then PUBLISH manually

Required : looking for a VM; place my PBI desktop file there; schedule an automatic refresh/publish

Any guidance on how to proceed with the same?

Thanks a ton!

Abhishek

Ok, maybe. But do you know that you don’t need to refresh and publish the desktop file at all?  You can publish once, then use a gateway to refresh automatically from Powerbi.com.

Hi abhitiwa,

As @MattAllington mentioned, you don’t need to refresh your data in PBI desktop. All of the refresh can be done in PBI service.

There’re three kinds of refresh in PBI service:

  1. Automatic refresh (online data source)
  2. Manual refresh
  3. Schedule refresh

For more details about data refresh, you can refer to the documentation: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/refresh-data

Usually, if your data source is not online data source, a data gateway is needed to make sure that the refresh on data will be successful.

There’re two kinds of data gateway in PBI:

  1. On-premises data gateway.
  2. Personal data gateway.

For more details about data gateway, you can refer to the documentation:
