PowerBI and SAP HANA - Description for value helps are null on HDI based calculation views

Hello PowerBI community,

I'm trying to use PowerBI on top of an SAP Hana HDI based calculation view which has variables/input parameters with value helps.

ip_salesorg2.png

These value helps are based on dimension type calculation views where the reference column has a label column like shown below :

column_label_decr.PNG

When using a Direct Query connection to the calculation view, the value helps show the key of the data but with null value as a description :

input_helps_hdi_powerBI.PNG

When using PowerBI on a non-HDI based version of the calculation view, PowerBI shows the description :

input_helps_XSC_powerBI2.png

Is it an current limitation on PowerBI Desktop with HDI based calculation views (like it is written there :  https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/desktop-sap-hana ) or a missing configuration step on Hana part ?

Thanks for your help.

PS : About the product version, I use :

  • PowerBI March 2020 update
  • SAP HANA DB 2.0 SP04 Revision 045

Best regards,

Yong-Eun KIM

Hi @Anonymous ,

According to your description, it seems to be the limitations for HANA variables attached to HDI-based Calculation Views which seems to be related to SAP HANA part

  • There are currently some limitations for HANA variables attached to HDI-based Calculation Views. These limitations are because of errors on the HANA side.

First, it isn't possible to apply a HANA variable to a shared column of an HDI-container-based Calculation View. To fix this limitation, upgrade to HANA 2 version 37.02 and onwards or to HANA 2 version 42 and onwards. Second, multi-entry default values for variables and parameters currently don't show up in the Power BI UI. An error in SAP HANA causes this limitation, but SAP hasn't announced a fix yet.

You also could pay attention to SAP HANA's new release or ask this in SAP HANA forum for more suggestions .

Best Regards,
Zoe Zhi
