Plotting Longitude and Laititude in Power BI Map

Hello All

I am trying to plot Longitude and Latitude to a MAP using Power BI and I am using a SQL Azure Database as a data source

However, I keep getting an error message as detailed below:

Please try again later or contact support. If you contact support, please provide these details.

Activity IDcf7d247b-5f62-4972-9396-5dcf4c320d52
Request ID89fbea95-647f-ed52-72ab-b87cbd06d26c
Correlation ID067df927-2206-4238-31f0-945d817a4ab9
TimeFri Jul 08 2016 14:24:10 GMT+0100 (GMT Daylight Time)
Version13.0.1500.393

I also have the cooordinates in a an alternative field whereby the data is stored as "51.262856,1.094641". If I map this to the location field on the Power BI MAP it does not work either.

Interstingly, when I connect to the Azure Dataset through Excel and insert a power MAP the Longitude and Latitude work perfectly fine.

Any help greatly appreciated.

So, you get that error when you try to import or refresh the data or when you are setting up the data source or at some other point in time?

You could use the LEFT, RIGHT and MID functions to split out your combined field into separate latitude and longitude and then those should work correctly.

To get ahold of support, use support.powerbi.com and the Contact Support button. You might want to turn on tracing, generate the error and then save the trace file to give to support.

Issue.jpgThe data imports into Power BI ok and is available to use.

I get the error when trying to plot the data onto a map in a Power BI report.

Are your columns tagged as Longitude and Latitude in your data model? Data model panel, select column, Modeling tab in ribbon, Data Category.

I was able to get those coordinates to work in a map visual although I may have reversed Lat/Long.

Sorry but I have this working now and I think I have placed this issue in the wrong section.

This does work in Power BI Destktop, however it does not work in the "Online" version of Power BI. However, I have managed to complete my task in Power BI Desktop and publised to my Oneline environment. So my issue is now resolved.

Cheers

Ian

Ah, OK, it was posted in Desktop so I assumed. Most likely, because you cannot manipulate the data model in the Service and flag those fields as the correct Data Category, that is likely why it does not work purely in the Service.
