PBI lockup/freeze while editing DAX measures

Good Morning

The past few weeks, I have had occassional issues with the screen freezing/PBI locking up while editing a measure.  It's not all the time, but annoying enough it's time to resolve.    The problem seems to have originated in either the Oct/Nov release, but finding same issue in the most recent Dec update.

The few times I've waited an extended period (4-5 minutes), the system may fix itself, but I've also waited 30 minutes multiple times before I shut down thru Task Manager.  Anybody else experience and thoughts on what I might do?

thanks

Thanks for the followup.   Support suggested I try an older version.  But my attempt at installing an old version always ended up with current version.

Then support provided a forum link with similar problem.  And within that dialog,  the suggestion was made to delete the measure, and start with a new one.  That seemed to have resolved.

  • I've been focused elsewhere, and the little time in PBI past few weeks, I've seem to have lost focus on this issue.  Thanks

Hi @Dellis81 ,

Does your problem still exist? What version of Power BI Desktop are you using? Is it the latest version? From your previous replies, it seems to be a certain file that has this problem, if it is a new file or a modification of an existing file, does it have a similar problem? Do others have the same problem? Also, I saw that you have raised a support ticket, is it convenient to share the situation later if the person concerned gives an update? Thank you.

Best Regards

Yes, I opened a support ticket, but still waiting on resolution.  We were able to duplicate the issue and collected traces.

I have been working on other non PBI projects past few days, so not more is known.

I have updated to Dec 21.

Thanks for following up

Hi @Dellis81

There is a new version(2.100.1182.0) recently released, please download and install it to see if that previous problem still exists. By the way, is there any progress on the support ticket you raised before for this problem? Did they give you a cause and solution to this problem? Any comment or problem, please feel free to let me know. Thank you.

Best Regards

@Dellis81 I think you are using terms differently, when you are saying base file you are connecting to, what you are referring to? Where is this file? Is it in power bi service? Can you clarify bit further?

I'm sorry - the file in question sources all it's data thru power query and normal SQL or excel files.   There are no shared datasets/composite models pulling into this file.

However, this file is at the "top of the pyramid" - and is used as a shared datasource downstream.   I would not think this to be an issue.   But I understand the reasoning behind the question if the problematic file was pulling from a shared dataset.

Is it a report connected to a dataset already in the service?

No, this particular pbix file is a stand alone report.   However, I do use the "Base" file to link with others.

@Dellis81 I regularly use Power BI, and have not noticed any issue with any of the releases you mentioned. Seems like it is machine-specific, maybe try on another machine.

Thanks for your quick response and thoughts.   I tested on a second machine, same results.   However, after playing around a bit - I sense the issue is related to a single PBIX file.    I have gone in and shut off preview features, issue remains.

I have opened up a support ticket with Microsoft.  Thanks!
