I am new to Power BI. I have installed an on premise gateway today (v14.16.6270.1) on my local network and configured 4 data sources that all show as connected. The data sources are web (json).
Next, I fire up Power BI Desktop. Here's my question - how do I connect to these data source that I just created? If I click "Get Data", I don't see the gateway data sources.
I have seen some posts talking about the gateway and sql server that say you just have the desktop connect directly to the sql server. Do I have to do the same for the web - just enter the urls directly in desktop. If that's the case, what is the point of the gateway? Is it just that when I publish the report to the cloud, the cloud can get the data from my local web servers on a refresh?

Correct to your last statement
The gateway is to be used for the power bi service
Once you publish your reports from power bi desktop to the power bi service
Those published reports will use the gateway to retrieve the necessary data
