Month to Date in the absence of any other Date filter applied in a report

I am calclating the Month to Date (MTD) values which i need to reflect in the absence of any additional date filter other than those in the DAX measures as follows:

Screenshot 2020-05-29 at 12.34.13.pngScreenshot 2020-05-29 at 12.34.31.png

The results of the above is as follows:

Screenshot 2020-05-29 at 12.33.47.png

The second DAX measure gives the right value as i checked this calculation using the inbuilt Power BI functions.  I am wondering why the first DAX measure is wrong as i got this from textbooks from reputable Power Bi MVPs.

Kindly assist,

Chris

@Chitemerere , If you do not use the year. The same month can be there across year hence the first formula has the issue.

Better to use time intelligence with date table

MTD Sales = CALCULATE(SUM(Sales[Sales Amount]),DATESMTD('Date'[Date]))
last MTD Sales = CALCULATE(SUM(Sales[Sales Amount]),DATESMTD(dateadd('Date'[Date],-1,MONTH)))
last MTD (complete) Sales = CALCULATE(SUM(Sales[Sales Amount]),DATESMTD(ENDOFMONTH(dateadd('Date'[Date],-1,MONTH))))
last year MTD Sales = CALCULATE(SUM(Sales[Sales Amount]),DATESMTD(dateadd('Date'[Date],-12,MONTH)))
last year MTD (complete) Sales = CALCULATE(SUM(Sales[Sales Amount]),DATESMTD(ENDOFMONTH(dateadd('Date'[Date],-12,MONTH))))

To get the best of the time intelligence function. Make sure you have a date calendar and it has been marked as the date in model view. Also, join it with the date column of your fact/s. Refer :

Hi @Chitemerere ,

In the first expression, no "Year" filter. So,it will sum values of the same month in different years.

Best Regards,

Icey

Many thanks, as pointed out in my initial post, i do not want to use Time Intelligence built in in Power BI
