Manually creating a date hierarchy (same as "auto date/time" without the associated problems)

Common advice is to avoid "auto date/time" because it can bloat a model

 

However, afaik it's not commonly known how to manually replicate what the automatic feature does, so that you get the same outcome (a date hierarchy) but selectively for the data fields you want

 

It's hard to figure out but easy to do with Tabular Editor, and I wondered whether it would be useful for other people - in which case, I'd write it up

Just to clarify for anyone reading, I'm offering to show how to create a date hierarchy for any date field, not asking for help

@Anonymous , I think for that you have to create a date column like year, month qtr, and create a custom hierarchy. Based on what I got 

 

Year = Year([Date])

Month = Month([Date])

Day = Day([Date])
