There's some DAX compatibility limitation in Direct Query. See:
DAX Formula Compatibility in DirectQuery Mode
And some transform function, like FORMAT() is not supported under Direct Query mode. Since you connect the data source directly, it doesn't allow your modify the source data. So transform steps is not supported in Query Editor.

If your using Direct query connection you can not perform the calucations using DAX.
