Is this even possible? Keeping a live Slicer along with SumX grouping logic

Hoping the community can help with something that's stumping us at the moment.

I'm hoping that this screenshot tells pretty much the whole story of what we're trying to do.  

The trick is that we must show Visual #1 with its date slicer, but ALSO try to arrive with the correct totals in Visual #3

Doing one OR the other is easy.  But it's trying to have both present on the page that's the problem.

Getting to Visual #3 is easy if we didn't have to make the slicer avaialble.  It's a pretty straightforward SumX type of logic and we could take advantage of Edit Queries or DAX tables in the background, etc.

But in order to keep the live Date Slicer, all that logic has to work in real time.  And the grouping by "Author" means it's a secondary grouping to get the final answer.

What is the logic of the measure Mailed Copies? Or juest tell me the formula or your measure of Mailed Copied.
