Is Power BI Desktop suited for my company?

Hello everyone,

I've done research on Power BI Desktop but I can't find the correct answers I'm looking for. I have to figure out whether Power BI Desktop is suited for my company. The company has around 130 employees but only 5 employees need access to one dashboard. I was wondering if I create a dashboard that gets is data from an Excel file that is automatically updated. And those employees will open the Power BI file, does it automatically update and will this work? Or is Power BI Pro more suited in this situation?

Thank you,

Tim Hellegers

Power BI Pro is a license. To understand the difference between Power BI Pro and Power BI Free, see this article.

Power BI Desktop is a free app used to write Power BI reports, which can be published to either the Free or Pro (or Premium for that matter) license, but the license will dictate how users can access it.

You can just use the Power BI Desktop app and get no license, just sharing the PBIX files like you might share an XLSX file, but then there are no automatic refreshes, users have the ability to get to the data easily (assuming back end permissions), etc.
