Installing "New" Power BI Has Ruined My Report

Since searching online would not give me the answer as to whether I already have the latest version of Power BI Desktop, I downloaded it and installed it from Microsoft's Power BI Desktop website.

(As it turns out, to add insult to injury, I had already had the latest version.)

Anyway, I opened a .pbix file that I created a couple of months ago and clicked "Refresh".

Now, my report no longer dislays any data.

What gives?  I have never had an installation, especially of the same version, destroy a report.

Hi @jellis1971 ,

You can find your current data source information in data source settings on Power BI desktop and make changes to it.

If you just need to update the connection credentials, select the "Edit Permissions" button in the middle.
This change will bulk modify all forms in the current report that use the previous data source. It is a batch operation modification.

Hope it helps,

"you do need to change what your queries are pointing at"

How do I do that?

There are plenty of reasons this could happen that have nothing to do with Power BI "destroying" your report.

How is it connected to data sources? Are these data sources unchanged?

Do you have filtering on the report resulting in blanks (e.g. relative date filtering)?

Hi There:

It's possible that the URL for the ERP application may have changed.  If that's the case, shall I simply "re-point" the report to the URL?  If I do, would I lose the set of tables that I was pointing to?

John

If the data source has moved, then you do need to change what your queries are pointing at.

Power BI is not intended to be a database for storing data. If you refresh a report, it will pull the new data from wherever your queries are currently pointing and replace whatever it pulled previously.

I just restored a backup of the report and, now, I see data once again.

I wish that there were a user-friendly way of telling Power BI what the new source is.  All that Get Data wants to do now is pull new tables instead of fixing the old ones.
